NACHO DUATO
Nacho Duato at the head of Mikhailovski Ballet from St Petersburg
The Mikhailovsky Theatre is a place, where traditions and heritage intermingle with creative research and daring experiments. The Mikhailovsky Theatre was established in 1833 by a decree of Emperor Nicolas 1 and soon became the Imprerial Theatre. High-ranking visitors including members of the Royal family frequented the theatre. The pre-revolutionary history of the theatre witnessed the productions of the French and German companies, the performances of great international stars. It was here that the Waltz King, Johann Strauss, crowned his 30-year-long Petersburg seasons with a brilliant ending – the production of operetta Der Zigeunerbaron. Fyodor Cahliapin acted as a singer and produced on stage.
In 1920, the Imperial Mikhailovsky Theatre was transformed into the State Maly Opera Theatre. Great musicians, opera and ballet figures supported and developed the creative spirit of the place.Lately the Mikhailovsky Theatre has gained new energy. General Director Vladimir Kekhman largely invested in the reconstruction of the theatre building and engaged world-famous professionals.
