COMPAGNIE MONTALVO-HERVIEU
JOSÉ MONTALVO and DOMINIQUE HERVIEU
José Montalvo and Dominique Hervieu develop an art of métissage, in which the poetry of urban dance, african dance, flamenco and even classical ballet is intensified by counterpoint with filmed images that refer as much to silent cinema as they do to the Surrealists. They are aware that every way of using your body is an expression of a mental state and of pleasure, and therefore they gather and integrate dances from all different cultures into their work. The technological imagery - with the possibilities of projecting, editing and pasting it provides - allows them to invent a tangible world in which the images entertain a malicious dialogue with the body. This juxtaposition gives rise to utterly original moments of poetry, beauty, humour and turmoil.

In this version, viewed from afar, which tries to tell the story of Orpheus humorously, the two choreographers invite us to see how this myth – limpid in appearance, but rather obscure in the final analysis – has been interpreted over the centuries. This Orpheus, reflecting on the power and the role of art today, offers Montalvo-Hervieu a field for the imagination in which their creative freedom will blossom by way of the dance, text, images and voices, the latter reworked live.An Orpheus of yesterday and for tomorrow.

It has always been the intent of José Montalvo and Dominique Hervieu to develop works for young viewers. After Hollaka Hollala with its dadaistic universe, Un Nioc de Paradis (the young people's version of the Paradis show), Le Corbeau et le Renard (The Fox and the Crow, a choreographed adaptation of La Fontaine's fable), La Bossa Fataka de Rameau (a version for the young of On Danse), they now intend to pursue this approach with a new youth-targeted show inspired by two recent creative works around Georges Gershwin: the Lyon Opera production of Porgy and Bess in June 2008 (re-booked for further dates in summer 2009) and the choreographed show, Good Morning, Mr. Gershwin, which has been performed in France and abroad since 2008.
